The experience

You're picked up from your Nairobi hotel and driven to Solio Ranch, where you register at the gate and begin a game drive through designated tracks. The reserve spans 19,000 acres and holds the largest concentration of rhinos in Kenya: sightings of 40 at a time are routine here. Beyond the rhinos, the landscape supports lions, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, Thompson's gazelle, impala, waterbuck, buffalo and oryx. The terrain also draws serious bird watchers: fly-catchers, eagle owls, long-crested eagles, buzzards and colonies in the Engare Moyok Swamp.

Around midday you stop for a packed lunch at a designated site within the reserve, then head out for a second game drive in the afternoon. The guide navigates the tracks and calls out sightings. Your role is to watch, photograph and take in the rhythm of the reserve. By early afternoon: between 4 and 4:30 p.m. You leave the gate and drive back to Nairobi, arriving at your hotel by late afternoon.
