Nairobi: Wildlife Safari, Safari Walk & Animal Orphanage
Wildlife moments so close to Nairobi city you almost forget the skyline is right there
You’ll feel the wild side of Nairobi as you spot lions and giraffes against the city skyline, walk above tall grass on the safari boardwalk, and meet rescued animals up close at the orphanage. With private transport and a local guide who knows every shortcut (and animal nickname), this day trip leaves you thinking about those quiet moments long after you’re back in town.
Step-by-step itinerary
Explore Nairobi National Park wildlife
- Visit African wildlife habitats
- Observe diverse bird species
- Tour the Animal Orphanage sanctuary
- Walk Nairobi Safari raised boardwalk
- Explore walking trails in park
The Experience
You barely leave Nairobi and suddenly there’s a zebra right by the road. Our driver, Daniel, just grinned and slowed down so we could stare — I mean, it’s wild seeing skyscrapers in the background while giraffes munch on acacia trees. The air smelled faintly of dust and grass (and something else I couldn’t name). We rolled down the windows for a better look — not sure if that was smart with lions around, but Daniel didn’t seem worried.
We stopped at the animal orphanage next. It’s quieter than I expected, with a couple of school kids giggling at a baby rhino who kept nudging its keeper. The guide explained how some animals were rescued after being orphaned — it felt heavy but hopeful. I tried to pronounce “kifaru” (rhino) in Swahili; Daniel laughed and said I needed practice. Fair enough.
The Nairobi Safari Walk was honestly my favorite part. Raised wooden paths wind through tall grass, and you get these close-up views of cheetahs and baboons — sometimes they’re so still you almost miss them. There was this moment where everything went quiet except for birds calling somewhere overhead, and I just stood there thinking about how strange it is to be surrounded by wildlife but still see planes landing in the distance. It’s not something you expect from a day trip out of Nairobi, you know?
