The experience

The day starts at the Kenyatta Monument, then moves into the parts of Nairobi where people actually live. Instead of a tour bus, you'll hop between matatus. The colorful minibuses that are how most Kenyans get to work, school and the market. Your guide rides with you and points out the rhythm of the city as it happens: the meat shopping areas where locals buy protein, the biggest mall in Kenya and how people navigate it, the streets where daily life unfolds without a tourist in sight. You'll talk to people you meet, learn some of the language, and see what the commute home from work looks like.

The Maasai Market stop is complimentary and comes at the end of the walk. Unlike the prices tourists usually pay, your guide helps you shop at what locals actually spend: the same stalls, the same haggling, the real cost. Lunch is included, and you can try street food if you want it, though it's optional. Bottled water comes with you throughout the day.

A few practical things: wear shoes that can handle walking and standing (no sandals or high heels); bring a copy of your passport's main page and visa stamp, or the original; the group stays at eight people maximum. Cameras aren't allowed for photos in town, but your phone is fine. Leave flashy jewelry at the hotel. The tour suits anyone from age seven up, and service animals are welcome.
