Cook a Kenyan meal from scratch with someone who knows the market and the recipes

A Kenyan cooking class where you shop a local farmers market, ride public transport like a resident, and cook a traditional meal from scratch at your guide's home. The guide is a food writer with 8 years leading food experiences in Kenya. You'll prep a main dish, a side dish and vegetables, take home what you cook, and skip the market if you prefer to start straight at the kitchen.

The Experience

What does a Kenyan kitchen actually look like, and what do people actually cook at home? This class answers both by walking you through the day the way locals live it. You meet your guide—a food blogger and writer who has spent 8 years showing visitors the food side of Kenya—and head to the farmers market together. You'll see what fresh produce looks like before it reaches a restaurant, talk to vendors, and pick out the vegetables and ingredients you'll cook with. The market tour is optional; if you'd rather skip it and go straight to cooking, that's fine too.

After the market, you take a matatu—Kenya's public minibus—to get a feel for how people move through the city. Then you arrive at the guide's home kitchen, where you prep and cook a complete Kenyan meal: a main dish, a side dish, and vegetables. The session runs 3 to 3.5 hours, and you can cook alongside your guide or watch and learn from a seat. You'll get your hands dirty if you want to, or stay clean if you prefer. Once everything is cooked, you take the food home with you. Vegetarian, pescatarian and gluten-free options are available if you let the guide know when you book.

The cooking location has lifts and is wheelchair accessible. Bottled water is included. If you have mobility concerns or cat allergies, let the guide know in advance so she can prepare.

Top questions

What kind of Kenyan dishes will I actually cook?

You'll prepare three traditional Kenyan meals—a main dish, a side dish, and vegetables—all made with fresh local produce you've just selected at the market. The guide will walk you through each step and share tips about how these dishes fit into everyday Kenyan cooking and life.

Do I have to go to the farmers market, or can I skip it?

The market tour is optional. You can join the full experience—shopping, the matatu ride, and cooking—or you can skip the market and start directly at the guide's home kitchen if you'd rather spend the time cooking instead.

Can I watch instead of cooking if I'm not comfortable in the kitchen?

Yes. You can cook alongside the guide and get your hands involved, or you can sit and watch while she cooks and explains each step. Either way, you'll take home the finished meal.

How long does the whole experience take?

The cooking class itself lasts 3 to 3.5 hours. If you include the farmers market visit and the matatu ride, plan for a bit longer, though the guide will confirm the full timeline after you book.

What if I'm vegetarian or have dietary restrictions?

Vegetarian, pescatarian, and gluten-free options are available. Let the guide know your dietary needs when you book so she can plan the menu and shop accordingly.

Is the location accessible if I use a wheelchair?

The cooking class location has lifts and is wheelchair accessible. If you have mobility concerns or other access needs, let the guide know in advance so she can make sure everything is set up for you.
