- Cycle through village path to Debaso Village
- Participate in cooking, weaving, farming, schooling
- Watch local coconut tree climbers

The experience
You start at Mkoko Explorers shop where the guide fits you with a helmet, walks through the route and safety basics, and fills your refillable water bottle at their chilled dispenser. The bikes come with water bottle holders already mounted. From there you follow the guide on an off-road village path lined with coconut and mango trees, heading toward Debaso Village where the day's stops unfold.
The ride is built around watching people work. You'll see local coconut tree climbers scale the palms with confidence and speed, stop where women are weaving colorful kikoy fabrics by hand, and watch families tend their farms using methods passed down through generations. You'll learn how they cook, what they grow, how children attend the local school. At Sita Sunset fishing beach you observe fishermen making their daily catch and learn about the mangrove tree restoration project happening along the coast. The whole loop takes two to three hours depending on how long you linger at each stop.
When you return to Mkoko Explorers, you can use their onsite showers to rinse off before heading back. All mandatory entrance and community fees are built into the price, so there are no surprise charges at the villages. Your payment directly funds school improvements and clean water initiatives in the communities you've cycled through.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What's the actual riding like on this mountain bike tour?
You follow off-road village paths through coconut and mango groves on a guided route that takes two to three hours total. The pace is set by the guide and the stops at each village, not by speed or distance covered, so it's more about moving through the landscape than pushing hard on the pedals.
Do I need to bring my own bike or is one provided?
Bikes are provided at Mkoko Explorers, where you choose one that fits and get a helmet and safety briefing before you start. Water bottle holders are already fitted to all bikes, and you fill a refillable bottle from their chilled dispenser to bring with you.
What happens at the villages? Do I just ride past or actually stop and interact?
You stop and engage directly with local people. You'll watch coconut tree climbers at work, see women weaving kikoy fabric, learn about farming and cooking methods, and visit the fishing beach where you observe the daily catch and hear about mangrove restoration efforts. The guide translates and explains what you're seeing.
Is this tour suitable if I haven't cycled in a while?
You should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness for the two to three hour ride on village paths. The pace is guided and includes stops, but the terrain and duration mean it's not a casual cruise. If you're concerned about your fitness level, ask the operator about the specific terrain before booking.
How does my money support the villages?
All entrance and community fees are included in the tour price and go directly to the villages. Your visit funds school improvements and clean water projects in the Giriama communities you cycle through, so the economic benefit stays local.
