The Experience

The day starts with pickup at your hotel and a briefing at Greenhouse mall before heading into Toi market, where you'll walk the different sections and learn how traders organize their daily work. From there you move into the Hope and Shine Kibera Center, a community development project where you volunteer alongside children and their teacher, joining in co-curriculum activities instead of observing from the outside. This is not a drive-through tour — you're spending time inside the spaces where locals are actually working.

Two aerial views of the slum give you the scale of the place: from ground level in the corridors you see one street at a time, but from above you see how the whole settlement fits together. Between those vantage points you shop at a bead factory, meet a women's group, and ride a matatu — the minibus that locals use every day — so you're moving through Kibera the way residents do. You'll also meet a youth group working on local improvement. The tour runs four to six hours depending on how long you spend at each stop, and your private guide shapes the pace.
