The experience
The tour starts with pickup from your Nairobi hotel at 8:30am and drives through Ngong Road to Bombolulu stage, where you descend on foot into Kibera. The walk covers uneven, hilly terrain along the main slum road, passing Soweto Village homesteads and a curio workshop where residents craft ornaments from animal bones. You'll see water vendors and shower shops, meeting people going about their daily routines as the guide explains how the community operates.
The Biogas Center is the centerpiece: the only facility in Africa using human waste as raw material to produce cooking gas and lighting for around 200 households. After that, you visit a community-based school run on donations, a real highlight of Kibera's education system. The tour ends with a return to your car and drop-off at your hotel.
Wear covered shoes. The ground is uneven and sandals won't work. Ask permission before taking photos, and leave valuables at home: passports, backpacks, large amounts of cash, flashy cameras and electronics stay behind. Dress modestly and avoid brightly colored or exposing clothing. The guide will help you navigate both the terrain and the etiquette of respectful visiting.
