The Experience

We started early in Nairobi—city still waking up, matatus buzzing past—then headed west towards the Maasai Mara. The road out of town is a mix of city chaos and sudden stretches of open land. Our guide, Peter, pointed out the escarpment views as we stopped for chai and mandazi at a roadside stall (the kind with plastic chairs and radio static). By midday, the air felt warmer and dustier. When we finally rolled into the reserve, you could smell dry grass and hear distant bird calls. That first evening game drive? We caught sight of elephants moving slow through golden light, and a group of zebras flicking their tails near the van.
