The Experience
We started early in Nairobi—city still waking up, matatus buzzing past—then headed west towards the Maasai Mara. The road out of town is a mix of city chaos and sudden stretches of open land. Our guide, Peter, pointed out the escarpment views as we stopped for chai and mandazi at a roadside stall (the kind with plastic chairs and radio static). By midday, the air felt warmer and dustier. When we finally rolled into the reserve, you could smell dry grass and hear distant bird calls. That first evening game drive? We caught sight of elephants moving slow through golden light, and a group of zebras flicking their tails near the van. Dinner back at Miti Mingi Eco Camp was simple but filling—rice, stew, chapati—and honestly tasted even better after a day on the road.
The next morning was all about the savanna. The sun comes up fast here; by 7am it’s already bright enough to see wildebeest shadows stretching across the grass. Our driver knew every turn—he’d stop suddenly when he spotted lion tracks or a flash of cheetah tail in the tall grass. We had lunch right by the hippo pool (watch your sandwich—the vervet monkeys are bold), listening to hippos snort and splash while crocodiles barely moved on the far bank. There’s something about eating outside with that wild backdrop that makes you forget about time completely.
On our last day, we squeezed in one more early game drive before breakfast—cool air, dew on the van windows, giraffes picking at acacia trees. After packing up at camp (hot showers really do feel like a luxury here), we made our way back to Nairobi with another stop for lunch along the way. The ride home is quieter—everyone’s tired but happy, scrolling through photos or just watching Kenya roll by outside.
