The experience

Maasai Mara National Reserve anchors the first two days. You're picked up from your Nairobi hotel between 7 and 8 a.m., travel via the Great Rift Valley viewpoint and Narok town for lunch, then enter the reserve for an afternoon game drive. The next day is a full day of game viewing across the reserve's savannah grassland and rolling hills. You break for a picnic lunch at the hippo pool, watching for hippos and crocodiles. An optional Masai village visit costs extra. Both nights are at Miti Mingi Eco Camp.

Days 3 through 5 move through Lake Nakuru and Amboseli. Lake Nakuru is known for its flamingos and white rhino sanctuary. You'll see Cape buffalos and waterbucks near the shoreline. Amboseli's swamp grounds hold elephants and hippos in abundance, and on a clear day Mount Kilimanjaro's peak is visible. You spend two full days there with picnic lunches and game drives, staying at Kimana Camp. Day 6 crosses into Tanzania at the Namanga border. You arrive in Arusha in the afternoon and stay at the Ambassador Hotel.

Lake Manyara National Park (day 7) is famous for tree-climbing lions and large flocks of flamingos. Day 8 descends 2,000 feet into Ngorongoro Crater, where the crater floor spans 165 kilometers and holds black-maned lions, rhinos, buffalos, elephants and grazing plains game. You spend the full day there with lunch at Ngoitoktok springs. Day 9 moves to Serengeti via Olduvai Gorge, where you visit the museum and gorge sites where prehistoric human remains were discovered. Days 10 and 11 wrap up with a final game drive in Serengeti, then the drive back to Arusha and the shuttle to Nairobi. Meals and drinking water are included throughout. Alcoholic and soft drinks are not.
