The experience

The drive from the Dead Sea to Petra runs about two hours each way, so you leave early and return in the evening. Your driver meets you at your hotel and handles all the logistics. You sit back and watch the landscape shift from the lowest point on Earth toward the rose-red cliffs of southern Jordan. The route itself is part of the day: the Dead Sea recedes behind you, and the terrain opens into the approach to Petra.

Once you arrive, you walk into the Siq, a narrow canyon carved into the rock that opens suddenly onto the Treasury, the most photographed monument on the site. The Treasury is the entry point, not the end. From there, the tour branches into the less-visited sections of the ancient Nabatean city: tombs cut into the cliff face, passages that wind deeper into the rock, and views most day-trippers never reach because they stick to the main circuit. Your driver is there to answer questions and adjust the pace to what interests you. Small groups mean you're not herded through on a schedule.

Entry tickets are included if you choose the Transportation & Entry option at checkout. If you book Transportation only, you'll purchase tickets separately at the gate. Either way, you get bottled water for the walk, and the return journey gives you time to sit with what you've seen. The entire site is over two thousand years old, built by the Nabateans as a trading hub, and the engineering alone (the water systems, the precision of the carved facades) is what the driver will walk you through.

What’s included

  • Entry tickets to Petra (if the Transportation & Entry option is selected).
  • bottled water throughout the day.
  • pickup and drop-off at your Dead Sea hotel.
  • an English-speaking driver for the full journey.

Is this one for you?Choose this tour if you want to move beyond the Treasury photo and actually spend time in the canyons and tombs without the pace of a large group. The small-group format and flexible exploration suit travelers who prefer to linger over a site rather than check boxes on an itinerary.

Top questions

How far is Petra from the Dead Sea, and how much of the day is spent driving?

Petra lies roughly two hours south of the Dead Sea by car. The round-trip drive accounts for about four hours of your ten to eleven hour day, leaving you five to seven hours to walk the site itself and explore the canyons and tombs at your own pace.

What is the Siq, and why does everyone talk about it?

The Siq is a narrow canyon, sometimes just a few meters wide, that cuts through the rock for over a kilometer. Walking through it is the only way into the main part of Petra, and it builds anticipation: the canyon walls rise higher as you go deeper, and then it opens suddenly onto the Treasury facade carved into the cliff. It's the dramatic entrance to the site.

Will I see the famous Treasury, or is this tour only about hidden spots?

You'll see the Treasury and the main highlights, but the tour also takes you beyond them. Most groups photograph the Treasury and leave. This tour ventures into the side canyons, the royal tombs, and the less-crowded passages where you can actually stand and look without a crowd around you.

What's included, and what do I need to pay for separately?

If you select the Transportation & Entry option, your booking covers the drive from your Dead Sea hotel, entry tickets to Petra, bottled water, and the return drive. If you choose Transportation only, you'll buy your entry ticket at the gate. Meals and personal expenses are separate either way.

Is there a guide who walks with us, or just a driver?

Your driver is an English-speaking professional who knows the history and can answer questions, but this is not a guided walking tour with a dedicated guide leading a group through each stop. You explore at your own pace with the driver available for context and recommendations based on what interests you.
