The experience

Getting to Petra from the Dead Sea means a three-hour private transfer each way. Your driver picks you up at the hotel lobby at 7am in an air-conditioned vehicle stocked with WiFi and mineral water. The route itself is part of the day. You have time to settle in before arriving at one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, a Nabataean city carved from red sandstone around the 6th century B.C.

At Petra, you choose how to explore. If you book the local guide option, they walk you from the main gate through the Siq: the narrow canyon that opens onto the Treasury, the site's most photographed monument. From there, the main trail passes the Street of Facades, the Royal Tombs and Pharaoh's Castle, each one carved directly into the rock face. Without a guide, you follow the same route on your own. Either way, the Monastery El Deir sits 800 stairs above the restaurant area. It's not part of a standard guided tour, but the path is straightforward enough to climb solo. Most travelers do both the Treasury walk and the Monastery climb in a single visit.

After you've finished exploring, your driver meets you at the entrance gate and takes you back to the Dead Sea, arriving in late afternoon. Lunch is available as an add-on if you want to eat at the site rather than pack something in.
