The experience
You're picked up in an air-conditioned vehicle and driven to Madaba to see the Madaba Mosaic Map, a sixth-century floor mosaic in the Church of Saint George. This is the oldest surviving original map of the Holy Land, and it covers part of the church's floor with intricate detail of the region and Jerusalem. From there, the route climbs to Mount Nebo, where the summit sits 700 meters above the Jordan Valley with views across to the Dead Sea. This is the site where Moses is believed to have been shown the Promised Land before his death, and today it's a Franciscan monastery and archaeological site with Byzantine mosaics and architectural remains that draw visitors from around the world.
The final stop is Bethany on the eastern bank of the River Jordan, nine kilometers north of the Dead Sea. This is where Jesus is believed to have been baptized by John the Baptist. The site contains Roman and Byzantine remains: churches, chapels, a monastery, caves used by hermits, and pools where baptisms were celebrated. An English-speaking guide meets you here to explain the archaeological and religious significance of the location. The whole day runs between four and seven hours depending on how long you spend at each site.
You can book this tour with or without the Bethany baptism site. If you choose the Madaba and Mount Nebo option alone, you skip the River Jordan stop. Private transportation and bottled water are included throughout. Specialized infant seats are available, and all areas and surfaces at the sites are wheelchair accessible.
