The Experience

I was supposed to meet my driver outside the hotel at 8, but of course I got distracted by the smell of cardamom coffee drifting out from the lobby. By the time I found him (he was waiting patiently, not even checking his phone), he just smiled and said in English, “No hurry — in Jordan we say guests are a crown on our heads.” I’d never heard that before. He helped with my bag and made sure I had water before we even started moving.

The car was spotless — not just clean but like someone actually cared about it. There was a faint lemon scent (not too much), and he’d set up the Bluetooth for music if I wanted it. We left Amman behind pretty quickly; city sounds faded into this big open silence, just the tires humming and sometimes a call to prayer from a village as we passed. He offered me a soda and some snacks (“just ask if you want more!”). At one point, he pointed out a roadside stand selling figs — we stopped so I could try some. The old man running it laughed when I tried to say “shukran” properly.

I asked about taking the scenic route instead of going straight to Petra. No problem at all — he seemed almost happy to show off little detours: a lookout where you could see endless desert, another spot where kids were selling necklaces made of colored sand. It wasn’t rushed at all; if anything, he kept checking that I was comfortable or needed anything else. The WiFi worked fine (I sent photos home right away), but honestly, after a while I just watched the land change colors through the window.

When we finally reached Petra, he jumped out first and insisted on carrying my bag — wouldn’t let me argue. Before leaving, he gave me tips about which gate would be less crowded that afternoon. That kind of small advice sticks with you more than guidebooks do, you know? Even now, weeks later, I remember how safe and looked-after I felt on that drive.
