The Experience

We were already squeezing into those low little go karts in Shibuya when I realized just how exposed you feel—knees up, engine humming under you, people everywhere. Our guide, Kenji, handed me my helmet and grinned like he knew what was coming. It’s loud here, all these crosswalk beeps and snippets of J-pop from storefronts. The first green light felt like stepping onto a stage—no joke, people pointed their phones at us right away. I waved back (awkwardly) and almost missed the turn Kenji signaled for.

The city smells different when you’re this close to the ground—kind of a mix of fried street food and car exhaust. We zipped past a group of teenagers outside a karaoke place in Shinjuku; one shouted something in Japanese that I didn’t catch but it sounded friendly enough. My hands got cold gripping the wheel even though it wasn’t really winter yet. I kept thinking how weird it is to drive a go kart where taxis swerve by like it’s totally normal. Kenji kept checking on us at red lights, making sure we were good—he even snapped some photos while we waited, which made me laugh because my helmet was crooked.

I didn’t expect to feel so visible—like you’re part of the scenery for everyone else’s Tokyo night out. There was this moment near Hachiko Square where everything just glowed: neon bouncing off puddles from earlier rain, people darting across the scramble crossing, someone’s perfume drifting by as we idled. It hit me then how wild it is to do a day trip in Tokyo like this—not tucked away in some bus or tour van but actually rolling through traffic with your own hands on the wheel.

After parking back at the garage (which took me two tries, not gonna lie), we headed upstairs to their lounge restaurant for snacks and drinks. My face hurt from grinning so much under that helmet. I still think about that view from street level—the blur of lights and faces—and how for an hour or two we weren’t just watching Tokyo but kind of starring in it ourselves.

What’s included

Your ride includes insurance coverage, all required safety gear like helmets, guided navigation through Shibuya and Shinjuku with plenty of photo stops along the way, plus time afterward to unwind over food or drinks at their new lounge restaurant upstairs before heading out again into Tokyo’s buzz.
