What does it feel like to stitch your first pair of jeans from scratch?

You’ll step into a real Tokyo denim workshop in Harajuku, guided by local staff who help you craft your own pair of jeans from premium Okayama fabric. Choose your patches, buttons, and rivets—then use professional tools (with plenty of help if you need it). You’ll leave not just with jeans but with memories stitched into every seam.

The Experience

My hands still smelled faintly like indigo hours after we left Daruma Jeans. When we first walked into the workshop—right off one of those side streets in Harajuku where every window is a riot of color—I honestly didn’t know what to expect. The staff greeted us with this kind of gentle excitement, like they genuinely wanted to see what weird ideas we’d come up with for our jeans. I kept running my fingers over the stacks of Okayama denim on the table, just feeling how heavy and real it was compared to anything I’ve ever bought back home.

Our guide, Yuki, switched between English and Japanese so smoothly that I barely noticed when he was talking to me or helping the couple next to us. He explained how Japanese denim became such a big deal here—something about old looms and stubborn perfectionism—and then let us pick out patches and buttons. I went for a gold rivet even though it clashed with my usual style (Li laughed at me, but whatever). There was this moment when I tried hammering a rivet myself and completely missed—nobody judged me, but Yuki did show me how to hold the tool properly. The sound echoed sharp off the concrete walls; it felt good somehow.

I didn’t expect to get so into choosing details—the tiniest patch or thread color suddenly mattered a lot. You could tell some people were here for fashion, others just wanted something different to do in Tokyo, but everyone got quiet for a bit when it came time to sew on their own patch. The light coming through the window hit my jeans just right and made the blue look almost electric for a second. It’s funny, but I keep thinking about that little flash of color now whenever I wear them back home.

What’s included

Your day includes entry to Daruma Jeans’ Harajuku workshop with hands-on guidance from English- and Japanese-speaking staff; all materials needed for customizing your own pair of unisex Okayama denim jeans—including choice of silhouette (subject to availability), one patch, six rivets, one button—and professional hemming before you leave.
