Tokyo Ginza Food Tour: Izakaya Hopping with Local Guide
Eat where locals eat, not where tourists queue
This Tokyo food tour takes small groups through Ginza's hidden eateries—three stops serving fresh seafood, Wagyu beef and home-style Obanzai cooking—led by an English-speaking local guide who knows which dishes to order and why. The route skips the main streets and department stores, moving instead through cozy izakayas and family-run spots, with seven to ten dishes and three drinks included. Dietary adjustments (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free) are possible with advance notice, though the operator cannot guarantee allergy-free preparation since food is made in partner kitchens.
Step-by-step itinerary
Tokyo Ginza Food and Culture Tour
- Visit fresh fish eatery with sake
- Take photos at Ginza crossing
- Enjoy Wagyu beef BBQ with cocktail
- Experience Kyoto-style home cooking
- Stop by hidden Izakaya alley
The Experience
What makes this different from a restaurant reservation is the guide—someone who eats in these neighborhoods and knows the owner, the daily catch, and which Sake pairs with what. The first stop sources fresh fish from Tsukiji Market; the menu changes daily depending on what arrived that morning, and you choose how it's prepared: sashimi, steamed with soy or miso, grilled, or in soup. A cup of Sake comes with it. The guide steers you toward what's best that day, so you're not guessing at a menu in Japanese.
Between the seafood spot and the Wagyu stop, the group pauses at the Ginza Mitsukoshi crossing—the main intersection behind the SEIKO clock tower—to take pictures. Then comes Wagyu beef BBQ: tongue, loin, and fresh lemon cocktail. The meat arrives sliced thin, meant to be eaten with grated daikon radish and green onion, which cuts the richness. The third stop is Obanzai, a home-cooking style that started in Kyoto in the 1970s and 80s—simple seasoning, boiled dishes, deep-fried sides. The owner, called "Okami-san," wears a kimono and treats the group like family coming home. Before the tour ends, there's a stop at a hole-in-the-wall izakaya hidden under the train tracks, open 24-7, where you can linger if you want.
The tour runs three to four hours and moves on foot through neighborhoods most visitors don't reach. Public transportation is nearby if you need it, but the walking is part of it—you're moving through the streets the guide knows, not being driven past them. The guide is also a photographer, so if a moment matters, they know how to frame it.

What's the difference between this tour and just going to a restaurant in Ginza?
The guide is a local who eats in these neighborhoods and knows the owners, the daily specials, and how to order. You're not reading a menu in Japanese or guessing what's good; the guide tells you what arrived at the market that morning and what pairs with what. You also reach spots—the Obanzai kitchen, the hidden izakaya alley—that don't advertise to tourists.
How many dishes and drinks do I get over the three to four hours?
Seven to ten dishes and three drinks across the three food stops. The first stop includes Sake; the second includes a fresh lemon cocktail; the third is home-style cooking. You can order additional drinks or food at any stop if you want more.
Can I do this tour if I'm vegetarian or have a dietary restriction?
Yes, with advance notice at booking. The operator can adjust for vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free diets. Keep in mind that food is prepared in partner kitchens, so allergy-free preparation cannot be guaranteed, and some stops may not have a substitution—but the guide will work to compensate across the other stops.
What is Obanzai, the third stop on the tour?
Obanzai is a home-cooking style that originated in Kyoto during the 1970s and 80s, built on simple seasoning and everyday side dishes—boiled foods, deep-fried items—that let the ingredients speak. The kitchen is run by an Okami-san (master lady chef) in a kimono who welcomes guests like family.
Is hotel pickup included, or do I need to get to Ginza myself?
Hotel pickup is not included. You'll meet the group in Ginza; public transportation options are available nearby to get there. The guide will confirm the exact meeting point when you book.
What happens after the official tour ends?
Before finishing, the group stops at a hidden izakaya alley under the train tracks that opens 24-7. You're welcome to stay and enjoy extra time there if you want to keep the evening going.
