Ride mountain transports to the alpine summit, then walk trails in the shadow of Japan's sacred peak.

This full-day tour from Nagano takes you up the Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route (a series of cable cars, ropeways and tunnel buses that climb to the Roof of Japan at 2,450 metres) with an English-speaking guide accompanying every step. You'll ride to Kurobe Dam, then ascend further to Murodo Station, where a guided walk crosses alpine meadows ablaze with summer flowers (July–August) or Japan's most vivid autumn colours (September–October), all beneath Mount Tate's 3,000-metre summit. The route closes in winter. Extreme weather may force cancellations with full refund. Children from age 10 are welcome. The tour runs 8 to 11 hours depending on group pace and traffic.

The experience

Getting to the Roof of Japan means riding a series of mountain transports (tunnel buses, cable cars and ropeways) that climb from the Nagano side of the Chubu Sangaku National Park. The ascent carries you to Kurobe Dam, an engineering landmark carved into the range, then higher still to Murodo Station at 2,450 metres. An English-speaking guide leads you the entire way, handling the logistics of each transport and pacing the group through the transitions. The temperature at altitude is notably cooler than the valley below: expect 11–16°C in July, 12–18°C in August, 9–15°C in September, and 3–10°C in October, so layering and a waterproof jacket are essential.

Once at Murodo, the guide takes you on a leisurely trail that stays in the shadow of Mount Tate's 3,000-metre summit. In July and August, the alpine meadows are thick with wildflowers. September and October bring some of Japan's most striking autumn foliage. The walk is the heart of the day: a chance to stand in one of Japan's three sacred mountains and see the landscape that earned this route its name. Bring water or something to drink (bottled drinks are sold at mountain stations), sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses, as the sun is strong at altitude. Lunch is not included, but restaurants and snack vendors operate at the summit and other stations along the way.

The tour departs from Nagano and returns there by late afternoon or early evening, typically between 17:30 and 18:30 (the exact time depends on group pace and traffic conditions). If you're planning onward train travel, book tickets for services after 19:30 to allow a buffer. The route is subject to closure in extreme weather. If that happens, you receive a full refund. Book at least 2 days ahead. The itinerary adjusts to traffic and group speed on the day, so the schedule is flexible within the 8- to 11-hour window.

What is the Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route?

The Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route is a series of mountain transports (cable cars, ropeways and tunnel buses) that traverse Japan's highest mountain range in the Chubu Sangaku National Park. It carries visitors from the Nagano side up to 2,450 metres at Murodo Station, passing Kurobe Dam along the way, and is called the Roof of Japan because of its elevation and the views it commands of the surrounding peaks.

When is the best time to see alpine flowers or autumn colours on this tour?

Alpine wildflowers bloom in July and August, when daytime temperatures average 11–18°C. Autumn colours are most vivid in September and October, with temperatures ranging from 9–15°C in September to 3–10°C in October. The route does not operate in winter.

How cold is it at the summit, and what should I wear?

At 2,450 metres, temperatures are significantly cooler than in the valley. July averages 11–16°C, August 12–18°C, September 9–15°C, and October 3–10°C. Bring layers, a waterproof jacket, a hat, sunglasses and good-quality hiking boots or shoes. Weather can change quickly, so be prepared for rain and wind.

Is lunch included, and where can I eat on the tour?

Lunch is not included, but restaurants and snack vendors operate at Murodo Station and other mountain stations along the route. You can purchase bottled drinks at these stops as well. Bring water and plan to eat at one of the summit restaurants if you want a full meal.

What happens if the weather is too extreme to run the tour?

In extreme weather conditions, routes to the snow corridor may close and the tour will be cancelled with a full refund. The operator will contact you if this occurs. The itinerary also adjusts to traffic conditions and group pace on the day of the tour, so the schedule is flexible within the 8- to 11-hour window.
