Togakushi walking tour from Nagano: Sacred shrines and soba
Massive cedars line a 2km forest path to the innermost shrine, where the god of strength moved a boulder to bring back the sun.
A guided walking tour from Nagano through the sacred forests and shrine grounds of Togakushi, following cedar-lined mountain paths to five Shinto sites and ending with a traditional soba meal. The tour runs 4 to 6 hours depending on group pace and season. Winter snow closes some shrines but leaves the cedar paths and forest trails open. Transport from Nagano Station, the soba lunch, and an English-speaking guide are included. Zenkoji Temple and the Ninja Museum are optional stops. Choose the half-day option if you have less time, or the full-day tour to visit all five shrines and Zenkoji Temple.

The experience
The tour starts at Beck's Coffee inside Nagano Station and heads into the mountains with your guide. The first stop is Kagamiike Pond, a forest clearing where the Togakushi peaks mirror on the water's surface, though snow closes this spot in winter. From there you walk to Tenmei Inari Shrine, where red Shinto gates line the path, then enter the Okusha area on a 2km forest trail flanked by 400-year-old cedars. The path climbs to Oku Sha, the innermost and most important of Togakushi's five shrines, dedicated to the god of strength who moved the rock so Amaterasu could emerge from hiding.
After Okusha you descend to Kuzuryusha Shrine, where a nine-headed dragon governs water and farmers pray for rain. The route then passes Chusha, the central shrine, where you stop for a bowl of handmade Togakushi soba noodles at a local restaurant: a regional specialty that draws visitors on its own. Hokosha, the lower shrine dedicated to a deity of learning and agriculture, comes next. If you book the full-day option, the tour can include Zenkoji Temple, a historic Buddhist site, before returning to Nagano Station. The Ninja Museum is available as an optional paid stop if conditions allow.
Winter transforms the route: snow closes the shrines themselves, but the cedar-lined paths and forest scenery remain open and walkable. The tour pace depends on the group, so allow extra time after the scheduled return if your next commitment is tight. Wear layers and sturdy walking shoes: Togakushi sits at 1,100 meters altitude, and rain brings cold even in summer. The guide speaks English throughout and leads a small group, so questions about the mythology and the sites are built into the experience.

Is this one for you?The half-day tour fits a morning or afternoon in Nagano if you want the main shrines and the cedar forest without committing a full day. The full-day option adds Zenkoji Temple and gives you time to linger at each shrine. Both require moderate fitness and sturdy shoes for forest walking, and winter snow closes the shrine buildings but leaves the cedar paths open for a quieter, colder experience.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (3 to 9 years); Infant (under 3): free.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What are the five Togakushi shrines, and which ones can I visit in winter?
The five shrines are Okusha (innermost, dedicated to the god of strength), Kuzuryusha (nine-headed dragon, water and matchmaking), Chusha (central, god of light), Hokosha (lower, learning and agriculture), and Zenkoji Temple (optional Buddhist site). In winter, snow closes the shrine buildings themselves, but you can still walk the cedar-lined forest paths and enjoy the winter landscape. The full experience of all five shrines is best from spring through autumn.
Is the soba lunch included, and where do we eat it?
Yes, a traditional handmade Togakushi soba noodle meal at a local restaurant is included in both the half-day and full-day options. Togakushi soba is one of Japan's most famous regional soba dishes, and the restaurant visit is built into the tour itinerary.
How long is the walk, and how difficult is it?
The Okusha forest path alone is about 2km, and the full tour runs 4 to 6 hours depending on the group's pace and which stops you choose. You need at least a moderate level of physical fitness. The tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnancy. Wear sturdy walking shoes and be prepared for steep sections and uneven forest terrain.
What's the difference between the half-day and full-day options?
The half-day tour (4 hours) covers the main Togakushi shrines and the soba lunch. The full-day option adds Zenkoji Temple, a historic Buddhist site in Nagano, with return transport to the station. Both include the guide, transport from Nagano Station, and the soba meal.
Do I need to pay anything extra during the tour?
The soba lunch and all shrine visits are included. The Ninja Museum is optional and charges separate admission. It is closed during winter. Drinks and snacks beyond the included meal are available to purchase. Transport to the meeting point at Nagano Station is not included in the tour price.
What should I bring and wear?
Wear suitable clothes and sturdy walking shoes. Togakushi sits at 1,100 meters altitude, and rain brings cold even in summer. Bring layers and a rain jacket. Do not bring strollers. Bottled water and small pets in carriers are allowed on the vehicle, but no food or coffee inside to keep it clean.
