The experience
You decide which part of Nagano to explore. The Zenkoji Area centers on one of Japan's oldest Buddhist temples, founded in 642 and housing the country's oldest known Buddhist statue. The approach runs down the Omotesando, a 450-meter stone-paved pilgrim's way lined with shops selling local oyaki and soba noodles. The Matsushiro Area preserves the legacy of the Sanada clan through castle ruins, samurai residences, and the Sanada Treasure Museum, alongside the Zozan Underground Bunker: a World War II military command center carved into the mountain. The Obuse Area centers on Katsushika Hokusai, the ukiyo-e master. The Hokusai-kan Museum displays his works from his later years, and Ganshoin Temple holds his ceiling painting of a phoenix, completed in his 80s. You pick which area suits your interests, then select 2–3 specific sites within it.
A licensed local guide who speaks English meets you on foot and walks the route with you for four hours. The guide holds the National Government Licensed Guide Interpreter certification, issued by the Japanese government and requiring deep knowledge of Japanese culture and history. You're not confined to a fixed itinerary. The guide adapts based on what draws you, whether that's the morning ceremony at Zenkoji Temple (held every day of the year), a sake brewery tour and tasting, a samurai-era residence, or a museum. Entrance fees to individual sites are separate, so you pay only for what you choose to enter.
This is a walking tour using public transportation where needed. There is no private vehicle. The route stays within one area, so you're not moving between distant neighborhoods. Tour dates can be shifted up to two days before departure, though the guide may change or the date may become unavailable. All areas and surfaces are wheelchair accessible, and the tour suits all fitness levels.
