The experience

The day starts with pickup at Sapporo Station and a 20–30 minute drive to BanKei Ski Resort, one of the closest ski areas to central Sapporo. Once you arrive, your guide escorts you to the main lodge, then to the rental shop to get fitted with skis, boots, poles, bindings, jackets and pants in your size. Your guide activates your lift tickets, points out the 17 runs and the different lift entrances, and shows you where to eat or rest during the day. Then you're free to ski at your own pace until 4:30 p.m.

If you book the optional two-hour beginner ski lesson, your guide will check you in at the ski school area before you start. After the lesson ends, you practice on your own for the rest of the day. Skiers of any level can use their time however they want. There's no set lunch time or break schedule, so you decide when and where to eat. Your guide remains on-site the entire day to answer any questions or concerns.

BanKei offers lower prices than other Hokkaido resorts and discounted ski and rental packages. The resort is accessible by a short subway ride and a brief bus ride from the station, so you spend more time on the slopes and less time traveling. You'll need to bring or buy gloves and goggles (¥1,000) and helmets (¥1,500) at the ski shop if you don't have your own.
