The experience
Sendai sits between two Japans: a modern city with a serious culinary scene and a gateway to mountain retreats, rugged coasts and remote islands. Matsushima, half an hour away, is ranked among Japan's three most scenic views for its bay dotted with pine-clad islets. This tour lets you build the day around what draws you. You pick from sites like Zuihoden Mausoleum (a riot of wood carvings built by Date Masamune, the first lord of the Sendai Domain), or Matsushima Bay itself, where you can walk to Oshima, a small pine-covered island with meditation caves and shrines, or cross the red bridge to Fukuura Island. Other options include Entsuin Temple, built in 1647 to house the mausoleum of Date Mitsumune; Zuiganji, one of the Tohoku region's most important Zen temples with gilded sliding doors; or Sendai Castle Ruins, which inspired a famous Japanese poem.
Your guide is a government-licensed interpreter certified by the Japanese government, which requires deep knowledge of Japanese culture and history. The tour runs six hours on foot, and you meet the guide within a designated area of Sendai. The guide speaks English and Japanese, so the commentary is in English throughout. Entrance fees to individual sites and lunch are not included, so you pay as you go and choose where to eat. The route is wheelchair accessible, and the tour suits all fitness levels, though it is walking-based.
