The experience
Zuihoden Mausoleum is the starting point for many itineraries: a riot of wood carvings and panels built by Date Masamune, the first lord of Sendai, with shaded paths lined by cedar trees meant to symbolize the family's longevity. From there, the route branches depending on what you choose. Sendai Castle Ruins sit on a hilltop and inspired a famous Japanese poem about desolation. A small museum and a model gate show how the original structure looked. The SS 30 Observation Lounge occupies the 29th and 30th floors of an office block and offers panoramic views across the entire city: best visited in morning or late afternoon light. Osaki Hachimangu, a National Treasure built in 1607, displays Momoyama-style architecture with intricate wood carvings and vivid lacquer.
Matsushima lies half an hour outside Sendai and is famous for its bay dotted with pine-clad islets, ranked one of Japan's three most scenic views for centuries. Zuiganji is one of the Tohoku region's most important Zen temples, rebuilt in 1609 by Date Masamune and known for beautifully gilded and painted sliding doors. Entsuin Temple, built in 1647 next to Zuiganji, houses the mausoleum of Date Mitsumune and is devoted to Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy. Fukuura Island is one of the few pine-covered islands in the bay open to the public, reached by a 252-meter red-painted bridge. Godaido, a small temple hall on an islet near the pier, has become a symbol of Matsushima. Its five statues are displayed to the public only once every 33 years. Oshima, a pine-covered island accessible by free bridge, offers short walks and decorated meditation caves that once served as a monk's retreat.
