Step-by-step itinerary

Cycling tour and historic visits

  • Start cycling at Road Station Kanzaki
  • Follow Tone River Cycling Road
  • Walk Edo period cityscape
  • Visit nationally-built power spot shrine
  • Return to cycling start point

The experience

You arrive at Narita and have a window of time before your next flight or your hotel check-in. Instead of waiting in the terminal or sitting in a hotel room, you cycle out on the Tonegawa Cycling Road: a flat, dedicated path that runs alongside the Tone River toward the coast. The road is easy enough for anyone who can ride a bike. The operator adjusts the distance and pace to match your fitness and your schedule. A guide who speaks English rides with you and handles the route.

The first stop is Sawara, a town whose streetscape froze in the Edo period. You walk through the old buildings and shops, then continue cycling to Katori Shrine, a shrine built by the state and famous as a power spot: a place believed to hold spiritual energy. After the shrine, you return to Road Station Kanzaki, where the cycling started. The whole ride takes four to six hours depending on what you choose to do and how long you linger at each place. Lunch can happen at a restaurant you pick, or you can skip it if your transit time is tight.

Pickup is flexible: your hotel in Inzai or Narita, either terminal at the airport (let them know when you land), or Chiba New Town Chuo Station, which is forty minutes by train from central Tokyo. The tour is private, so it is just you, anyone traveling with you, and the guide. You can ask to shorten the route, change the stops, or adjust the whole day to fit around a flight or an afternoon commitment.
