The experience

Two hours on foot through Sapporo's downtown takes you past the Nijo fish market, a public market that has operated for over a century and still draws locals and visitors for fresh seafood, crabs, salmon eggs and sea urchin. The market sits in a single city block in central Sapporo and holds small restaurants and drinking places among the shops. Your guide walks you along the Sosei River, a smaller waterway that once bustled with circuses, year-end markets and street vendors. The riverbank is now a park where you can feel the seasonal changes and the city's history woven into the space.

The route passes Odori Park, a 1.5-kilometer strip of green that opened in 1871 as a firebreak and became the city's gathering place for festivals and events. Sapporo TV Tower stands in the park: a 147-meter structure built in 1957 by the architect who designed Tokyo Tower, with digital clocks installed at 65 meters. You'll also walk through Susukino, Sapporo's entertainment and dining district, known among locals for food, drink and seasonal festivals. If you want, the tour ends at a local restaurant where you can eat Sapporo specialties and local beer not found in guidebooks.

You pick the daytime or night tour at checkout. Both follow the same route and last around two hours. The guide speaks English and knows the neighborhoods as a local. Because the tour is entirely on foot, bring shoes you can walk in comfortably. The tour cancels if rain or snow falls on the day, and you get a full refund.

What’s included

Both work for any fitness level, but the two-hour walk means you need shoes you can move in all the way through.
