A chopstick-making workshop in Osaka's castle district where you select from 15 types of wood, use traditional Japanese tools to shape and sand your chopsticks, and personalize them with an engraving before taking them home. English-speaking staff guide you through the one-hour session. No prior experience needed. You also receive a scented sachet made from wood shavings infused with Japanese aroma oil.

The experience

You start by picking your wood. Fifteen types are available, including rare options, and each one changes how your chopsticks will look and feel in your hand. Once you've chosen, the staff hands you a kanna, the traditional Japanese plane, and shows you how to shape the wood down to the right thickness and taper. It's hands-on from the start: you're the one holding the tool, making the cuts, feeling the wood respond.

After shaping comes sanding to a smooth finish, then an oil coat that gives the chopsticks a glossy look. The whole process takes about an hour. If you want, you can add an engraving (your name, a phrase, whatever you choose, in Japanese or your own language), for an additional fee. By the end of the session, you walk out with a completed pair of chopsticks you made yourself, plus a small wooden sachet scented with Japanese aroma oil. Some people stay afterward to join a ramen-making class and use their new chopsticks right away.

The workshop sits in the Osaka Castle area and welcomes families, couples and friends. Children from age 6 can participate. No special skills or fitness level is required: the staff speak English and adjust the pace to whoever's in the room. Public transportation stops nearby if you're coming from elsewhere in the city.
