The experience
Nerikiri is a form of Japanese wagashi: delicate, hand-shaped sweets that look like flowers, leaves and seasonal objects. A certified instructor guides you through the process step by step, showing you how to color, knead and sculpt the sweet paste into designs inspired by the four seasons and Okinawa's traditional arts. All tools and ingredients are provided, so you arrive with nothing but your hands and leave with finished pieces you made yourself.
The class runs for two hours on the standard option, or 2.5 hours if you add matcha and Japanese sweets to the end. The 60-minute version skips the matcha service but keeps the core lesson and take-home box. You'll have time to photograph your work before you leave, and the sweets are packed so they travel well. Children from age 10 can join, and infants can attend if held by an adult.
This is an indoor experience, which makes it a useful plan on a rainy day or when you want something beyond Okinawa's beach side. The workshop sits apart from the island's main tourist routes, so it feels like a genuine cultural class rather than a performance staged for visitors.

What exactly is Nerikiri and how do I learn to make it?
Nerikiri is a traditional Japanese sweet made from colored bean paste, hand-shaped to look like seasonal flowers, leaves and natural forms. The certified instructor teaches you the shaping and decorating techniques step by step, starting with how to color and knead the paste, then moving into the sculpting and assembly. You create your own designs during the class and take them home in a box.
Which course option should I pick? The 60-minute class or the longer ones with matcha?
The 60-minute Nerikiri Experience covers the core sweets-making lesson and take-home box. The 2-hour and 2.5-hour options add matcha tea and Japanese sweets served at the end, giving you a fuller cultural experience. The 2.5-hour version is the longest. Pick the 60-minute class if you're short on time or want just the hands-on making. Pick one of the longer options if you'd like to sit and enjoy matcha and sweets after you finish shaping.

No previous experience is required. The instructor teaches you everything from the start, and the class is designed for complete beginners. All the tools and ingredients are provided.
What do I do with the sweets I make? Can I really take them home?
Yes, your handmade Nerikiri are packed in a take-home box so you can bring them with you. They're a tangible memory of the class, and you can photograph them before you leave.
