Two hours by boat from Naha, the Kerama reefs are where you actually see the fish

You board a large boat in Naha and spend the day at two or three Kerama reef sites with an instructor, snorkeling among colorful fish and coral. Gear, wetsuit, photos, shower and pickup are all included. From January to March, whale watching is added if weather permits. You return to Naha by late afternoon.

The Experience

The boat leaves Naha harbor early, and by the time you're past the breakwater the water has already changed color — that particular blue-green the locals call Kerama blue. You'll stop at two or three snorkeling sites across Tokashiki Island, Zamami Island, Kuroshima Island or Maejima Island, depending on conditions that day. The instructors are trained in first aid and they stay with you the whole time, so even if you've never snorkeled before, you're not figuring it out alone. Snorkeling gear is provided — wetsuit, hood, coat — and the boat itself is large enough that you're not crammed in with thirty other people.

The water temperature in winter sits around 22°C, which is why they hand you a 3mm hooded vest to wear under the wetsuit and a boat coat to throw over it when you're not in the water. In summer they serve Kerama blue shaved ice while you're cruising between sites. From January through March, whale watching gets added to the itinerary if conditions allow — though the source is honest about it: whales may not show up depending on the sea state. There's also a four-meter cliff jump if you want it, and the boat moves slowly enough between stops that you can actually see the islands as you pass them, not just blur past.

Pickup and drop-off happen within Naha City, so you don't arrange transport separately or spend an hour getting to the dock. The tour includes a hot shower afterward, a changing room, towels, and water. They photograph you underwater — roughly two to three shots per person — and you download them the same day from the guide's Facebook page. Motion sickness medication is available if you need it. The whole day runs full-length, which means you're in the water long enough to actually relax instead of rushing through two quick dips and heading back.
