The experience

I didn’t expect to start my day in Nara dodging a very insistent deer: my fault for holding senbei biscuits too low. Our guide, Emi, just laughed and handed me another biscuit (apparently the trick is to bow first, the deer actually bow back). The air smelled faintly of cedar and old stone as we walked under Kasuga Taisha Shrine’s lanterns: hundreds of them, some green with moss. There was something quiet about that forested path, even with all the laughter around.

We made our way to Todai-ji Temple next. I’d seen photos of the Great Buddha before but standing there, bronze toes looming above my head, it felt different. The hall echoed every shuffle and cough. Someone’s phone chimed by accident and everyone froze for a second (I almost laughed). Afterward, we stopped at Nigatsudo for a view over Nara city.
