The Experience

I didn’t expect to start my day in Nara dodging a very insistent deer—my fault for holding senbei biscuits too low. Our guide, Emi, just laughed and handed me another biscuit (apparently the trick is to bow first; the deer actually bow back). The air smelled faintly of cedar and old stone as we walked under Kasuga Taisha Shrine’s lanterns—hundreds of them, some green with moss. Emi told us about the shrine’s history while a group of school kids in yellow hats practiced their own bows nearby. There was something quiet about that forested path, even with all the laughter around.

We made our way to Todai-ji Temple next. I’d seen photos of the Great Buddha before but standing there—bronze toes looming above my head—it felt different. The hall echoed every shuffle and cough. Someone’s phone chimed by accident and everyone froze for a second (I almost laughed). Afterward, we stopped at Nigatsudo for a view over Nara city; it was hazy but you could still see rooftops stretching out forever. I remember thinking how old everything felt here, but not tired—just... patient?

Lunch came right when I needed it: warm rice with pickled vegetables from Nara and miso soup that tasted like someone’s grandmother made it. We sat on tatami mats in a small townhouse near Naramachi district. That’s where Emi taught us furoshiki wrapping—mine ended up lopsided but she said it had “personality.” Li from our group tried saying “furoshiki” in Japanese and everyone cracked up (I’m still not sure if he got it right). We left carrying our own cloths—mine still smells faintly like rice.
