The experience
This tour packs the main draw of Nara into a single day: the Great Buddha at Todai-ji, built 1,300 years ago and still commanding the room it sits in, plus the shrine and temple grounds where deer roam freely. Your guide leads you through Kofukuji Temple first, where the five-story pagoda rises above the grounds and the Asura statue draws visitors for its melancholic expression. From there you move to Todai-ji itself, where the scale of the wooden structure and the Buddha inside it hits different in person than in photos.
The route also takes in Kasuga Taisha Shrine, set in Nara Park where the deer are considered messengers of the shrine's gods. You can feed them senbei (rice crackers) if you want. Todai-ji's Nigatsudo Hall, a suspended temple that juts out from a cliff, offers a view of the town and the Great Buddha Hall below, especially striking if lanterns are lit. Between major stops, you'll pass through a small market in front of Todai-ji's gate with eleven shops selling lunch options and local products. The whole day runs six hours on the standard itinerary, though you can book a four-, five-, or seven-hour version and swap in other sites: Shin-Yakushi-ji Temple, Isuien & Neiraku Museum, Toshodai-ji Temple, or Heijo Palace Site are options if something closes or you want a different mix.
Wear comfortable shoes. You'll walk a lot. Some spots don't take credit cards, so bring cash. Your guide is English-speaking and can adjust the route if weather turns or a site closes unexpectedly. The tour ends at a different spot from where it starts, though you can ask your guide to finish elsewhere if that helps your day.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (4 to 17 years): free; Infant (under 4): free.
What is the Great Buddha at Todai-ji Temple actually like when you stand in front of it?
The Great Buddha is a colossal wooden structure built 1,300 years ago by an emperor seeking peace and salvation for the people. Seeing the scale and detail of it in the hall is the centerpiece of the day and the reason most first-time visitors come to Nara.
Can I customize which temples and shrines I visit, or is the route fixed?
You can book a customizable tour and swap in different sites: Naramachi District, Heijo Palace, Toshodai-ji Temple, Yakushi-ji Temple and others are available instead of or alongside the standard stops. If you don't specify changes, the tour follows the pre-planned route of Kofukuji, Todai-ji, Nigatsudo and Kasuga Taisha.
Are meals and entrance fees included in the tour price?
No. Entrance fees, lunch, transportation costs and other personal expenses are your own. A small market near Todai-ji has eleven shops with restaurants and cafes where you can eat, and you'll have time to stop there.
What happens if a temple or shrine is closed on the day of my tour?
If a site closes temporarily, your guide will suggest an alternative spot from the customizable list and adjust the route. Let your guide know ahead of time if you have preferences for swaps.
