The experience

You start in Nara Park, where the route takes you past herds of semi-wild deer that roam freely through the grounds. The guide leads you to Todai-ji Temple, where you enter to stand in front of the Daibutsu, Japan's largest Buddha statue, and learn how the city grew around this monument. From there you ride to Kikuichi, a knife shop that began as a samurai sword maker and now crafts cooking knives. The guide can arrange free engraving if you want to buy.

The tour ends at Kasuga Taisha Shrine, where you walk the grounds and learn about Shinto spirituality, the oldest religious concept in Japan. You finish on the shrine's wooden bridge with time to take a final photograph. Because this is a private tour, your guide watches the group's rhythm and adjusts stops, pacing and route details based on what your family wants to see and how your kids are doing on the bikes. No e-bikes or child seats are available, so this works best for children confident on their own pedals.

Lunch is included in the price, and the tour takes between three and four hours. A live guide speaks English, French or Japanese depending on your booking. Public transportation runs nearby if anyone needs to step off the bikes and rest.

Is this one for you?Three to four hours leaves room for another activity or meal elsewhere in Nara the same day. The private format means your guide watches your kids' energy and can slow down, skip a stop or take a different path if the group needs it. Something a shared tour cannot do.

What is Todai-ji Temple and why is it on the tour?

Todai-ji Temple houses the Daibutsu, Japan's largest Buddha statue, and is one of Nara's most important landmarks. The guide takes you inside to see it and explains the temple's role in the city's history.

Do we really see deer in Nara Park, and can we touch them?

Yes, semi-wild deer live throughout Nara Park and you'll ride past them during the tour. They're accustomed to people but are still wild animals, so the guide will explain how to interact safely around them.
