The experience

Start the morning on an e-bike, cycling through Nara Park where deer roam freely alongside you. Your guide navigates quiet routes away from traffic, passing through the Nandaimon Gate before you reach Todai-ji Temple to see the Great Buddha statue inside the Daibitsuden hall. You'll also have the chance to crawl through the Buddha's nostril, a ritual thousands of visitors attempt each year. Between temples, stop at Kikuichi, a knife maker that has operated since the 1600s, where you'll learn about Japanese cutlery directly from the craftspeople. The morning ends at Kasuga Taisha Shrine, walking its lantern-lined paths through a sacred forest.

After a short train ride to Osaka, the afternoon shifts to food and neighborhoods on foot. In Tsuruhashi, you'll sit down for yakiniku (Japanese barbecue where you grill meat at the table) with a soft drink included. The guide explains the area's post-World War 2 history and its large Korean community. From there, you'll browse Den Den Town, Osaka's electronics and anime district, then move into Shinsekai to try kushikatsu, a fried skewer specialty born here in the late 1920s, with another drink included. The tour ends at Dotonbori and the Glico Running Man Sign, Osaka's most photographed landmark since 1935, leaving your evening free to explore on your own.

The e-bike handles the distance, seven hours total, without wearing you out, though you need to ride confidently. The guide can refuse participation if cycling ability is unsafe. Deer cookies come with you to feed the animals in the park. Street food (takoyaki, yakisoba or okonomiyaki) is also included, so you're eating at three points across the day.
