Step-by-step itinerary

Sake tastings and Naramachi exploration

  • Guided tasting of local Nara sake
  • Walk through historic Naramachi streets
  • Explore traditional merchant townhouse
  • Tasting at Harushika sake brewery
  • Visit Kasugayama Brewery and taste

The experience

Nara is the birthplace of refined sake, the foundation of modern Japanese brewing, and this tour skips the temples to explore that heritage instead. You start at a brewery with the basics: how to read a label, identify flavors, and understand what makes one sake different from another. That foundation matters because you'll taste around 10 sakes across the morning, and knowing what to listen for in the aromas and finish turns the experience from a blur into something you can actually remember and choose from later.

The walk through Naramachi is where the history becomes real. You move through narrow streets lined with traditional merchant townhouses, some centuries old, while your guide connects the sake you tasted to the everyday culture and trade that built the city. You step inside one of those townhouses to see the architecture and hear the stories behind it. Nara's free-roaming deer wander through the neighborhood, so they often appear without warning. By the time you reach Harushika (one of Nara's best-known producers, established right in Naramachi). You understand why the brewery sits there and what it has been doing for generations.

Harushika and Kasugayama Brewery, your second stop, represent different sides of Nara sake. Harushika leans into tradition. Their sparkling sake is light and refreshing, a style the guide team particularly recommends. Kasugayama blends 200 years of technique with modern creativity, offering yuzu and apple fruit liqueurs alongside their core sakes. At each brewery, your guide walks you through the differences in aroma, sweetness, dryness and finish, so by the final tasting you're not just drinking. You're making choices based on what you actually prefer.

The guides here are National Government Licensed Guide Interpreters, certified sake professionals, or former toji (sake brewmasters). Kampai Sake Tours has run over 1,000 tours since 2017, and every guide completes their own training in hospitality and tour delivery. You don't need to know anything about sake before you arrive. The guide's job is to make it easy to understand and keep it relaxed.

What exactly is sake, and how is it different from wine or beer?

Sake is a fermented beverage made from rice, koji mold, and water, not a distilled spirit, though it can be as strong as wine. Nara's brewers developed the refined techniques that became the foundation of modern Japanese sake, and your guide explains how those methods create different styles and flavors you'll taste during the tour.

Do I need to know anything about sake before I join this tour?

No. The tour starts with a guided tasting that teaches you the basics: how to read a label, what to listen for in the aroma and finish, and how to identify the flavors you personally enjoy. That foundation lets you compare and understand the around 10 sakes you'll taste across the two breweries and sake shop.

What happens during the walk through Naramachi?

You move through the historic streets with your guide, who shares stories about Nara's history, everyday culture, and centuries-old connection with sake. You step inside a traditional merchant townhouse to see the architecture and learn about the neighborhood's past. Nara's famous free-roaming deer often appear along the way.

What's included in the tour price?

The tour includes a professional English-speaking guide, around 10 sake tastings at two breweries and one sake shop (all tasting fees), entry to a traditional Naramachi merchant townhouse, and a Kampai Sake Tours original sake-learning Uchiwa fan (available seasonally). Food and snacks are not included. You can purchase bottles or souvenirs separately if you wish.

How long does the tour take, and what's the group size?

The tour runs 3 hours and operates in a small group. You'll meet at Yoshikien Garden and finish after the final brewery tasting in Naramachi.
