Step-by-step itinerary

Visit Zenkoji Temple and Samurai Experience

  • Walk ancient stone paths at Zenkoji Temple
  • Explore temple grounds and local shops
  • Attend Samurai katana lesson with instructor
  • Dress in yukata and hakama outfit
  • Practice Samurai poses and stances
  • Take photos and videos of experience

The experience

The experience starts at Zenkoji Temple itself, where you walk the ancient stone paths pilgrims and samurai have trodden for over fourteen centuries. The approach to the temple is lined with traditional inns, shops and cafés: part of the atmosphere rather than separate from it. Your guide explains the temple's role in Japanese spiritual life and points out one of Japan's oldest Buddhist statues, believed to have arrived from India centuries ago. This is not a rushed walk-through. The temple's scale and history ask for time to absorb.

From the Niomon Gate, a five-minute walk brings you to a Japanese traditional-style room where the katana training happens. You'll change into samurai-style clothing (yukata, hakama pants, and a theatrical sword), and the Master Samurai instructor teaches you from the ground up: proper posture, grip, the angles of attack and defense stances, and the discipline that shapes every movement. The focus is on technique and grace, not combat. You'll strike poses, practice kata accessible to all levels, and move through the session at a pace that lets you absorb each step. Families and solo travelers train side by side. There's no minimum age, and the instructor builds the experience around enjoyment and self-expression rather than performance.

Bring a camera or phone. The combination of the traditional room, the samurai outfit, and the instruction creates moments worth capturing: both for your own memory and because the visual contrast between everyday life and this one afternoon tends to stay with people. Meals and snacks are not included, so plan to eat before or after the session. The stairs up to the dojo are short but steep and narrow. If you have mobility concerns, mention them when you book so the operator can advise on access.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (6 to 16 years); Infant (under 6): free.

What is Zenkoji Temple and why is it significant?

Zenkoji Temple is one of Japan's oldest and most revered Buddhist temples, standing for over 1,400 years in Nagano. It houses one of the oldest Buddhist statues in Japan, believed to have arrived from India centuries ago, and has drawn pilgrims from across the country for centuries to pray and reflect in its peaceful grounds.

Will I actually learn to use a real katana sword?

You'll train with a theatrical sword, not an authentic katana. In Japan, real katanas are classified as illegal weapons under strict licensing laws, so theatrical swords are standard for training and performances. You'll learn proper sword techniques, postures, and kata from a Master Samurai instructor, all designed to be accessible and safe for all levels.

What do I wear during the samurai training part?

You'll dress in traditional samurai-style clothing provided for the session: a yukata (light kimono), hakama pants, and a sword. The outfit is part of the experience and helps you move and feel the role of a samurai apprentice as you train.

How much walking is involved at Zenkoji Temple?

The temple walk is part of the guided tour but is not strenuous. You'll walk along the ancient stone paths and the approach lined with traditional shops and cafés, taking time to absorb the atmosphere and history. The pace is set by the guide and allows for reflection rather than rushing through.
