One of Japan's 12 original castles, plus a post town frozen in time

A full-day tour from Nagano visits Matsumoto Castle (one of only 12 original castles left in Japan), and Narai-juku, the longest post town in the country, with over 1km of traditional wooden buildings lining a single street. The guide leads you through both, explains their history, and includes a seasonal hands-on activity at Narai-juku such as making chopsticks or stepping inside a preserved old home. Transport between all destinations and castle entry are included.

Explore Matsumoto and Narai-juku

  • Walk Nawate Street in Matsumoto

The experience

The day starts in downtown Matsumoto on Nawate Street, also known as Frog Street, a car-free shopping area where you can browse local goods, try ice cream and snacks, or visit the adjacent Yohashira Shrine. From there, a short walk takes you to Matsumoto Castle itself. The castle's bold but delicate exterior design reflects its role as one of the largest and most impressive of Japan's surviving originals, and stepping inside reveals how samurai lived and governed in the feudal era.

After the castle, you board the tour bus for the drive to Narai-juku. This post town stretches over 1km along a single main street lined entirely with traditional wooden buildings, creating an atmosphere that feels pulled from another era. Your guide walks you through the town, explaining why it was important as a stop on old trade routes and what daily life looked like there. A seasonal activity (such as hand-making chopsticks or entering a preserved home) is included in the tour price, letting you engage directly with the region's crafts and domestic history rather than simply observing from the street.

All transport runs on a dedicated tour bus, and the guide speaks English throughout. About 5 hours of the 10-hour day are spent traveling or boarding. The rest is at the destinations themselves. Infants can travel in a pram or stroller, and the tour suits all fitness levels.
