I’d heard about the “Pumpkin Hall” cave in Miyakojima from a friend but honestly didn’t expect much — caves are caves, right? But as soon as we pushed off in the canoes, gliding over that weirdly clear water, it hit me how different Okinawa feels from the rest of Japan. Our guide, Yuki, was already joking with us about our paddling skills (or lack of). The sun was hot but there was this salty breeze that kept things from getting sticky. I remember the sound of the paddle dipping in and out — kind of hypnotic after a while.

Getting to the limestone cave felt like sneaking into another world. The entrance is small but once you’re inside Pumpkin Hall, it’s cool and smells a bit earthy — almost sweet? Yuki pointed out the giant stalagmite shaped like a pumpkin (it really does look like one), and told us some Ryugu myth story I only half caught because I was still staring at those weird rock formations dripping everywhere. The ground was slippery so we had to watch our step; my hands got muddy but I didn’t mind. There’s something about feeling the stone under your palms that makes you forget you’re an adult for a second.

The best part? At the end there’s this spot where you can jump into a natural pool. Not gonna lie, I hesitated — it looked higher than I thought. Some kid went before me and cheered when he surfaced so… couldn’t chicken out after that. The splash woke me up more than coffee ever could. We laughed about it on the way back to shore, everyone soaked and grinning like idiots.

I still think about that first glimpse of sunlight when we came back out — everything felt brighter somehow. Yuki snapped some photos with his waterproof camera (he promised to send them all later) and we just sat there for a minute before paddling back. It’s not fancy or anything but if you want a day trip in Miyakojima that gets you moving and maybe out of your head for a bit… this is it.
