You know that soft clinking sound coral makes when you’re floating above it? That’s the first thing I noticed when we dropped into the water off Miyakojima — well, that and my mask fogging up because I was grinning too much. Our guide, Yuta, pointed out a sea turtle almost right away. I’d read about these “sea turtle snorkeling” tours but didn’t expect to actually swim alongside one for so long. The turtle just… glided past us, totally unbothered, nibbling at something on the rocks. My flippers kept brushing sand and I remember thinking how warm the water felt compared to Okinawa’s main island last spring.

After lunch (I ate way too many onigiri from the convenience store), we regrouped for the next bit — kayaking over to Pumpkin Hall. The sun was sharp on the water but there was this breeze that smelled faintly of salt and grass. Paddling wasn’t hard; Yuta joked about my “noodle arms” and helped me steer straight. The cave entrance looked smaller than I imagined, more like a secret than a tourist spot. Inside Pumpkin Cave it got cooler fast, air thick with mineral smell and mud underfoot — someone ahead slipped and we all laughed (nervous energy maybe). The stalagmites really do look like giant pumpkins if you squint; apparently locals call it Ryugu Palace. We could only take photos at the entrance now (something about preservation), but honestly I kind of liked putting my phone away for once.

There’s this part where you have to climb up slippery limestone using a rope — not gonna lie, my heart thumped louder than I’d admit at the time. But everyone cheered each other on (even in mixed English and Japanese) and by the time we all made it through that last pool, nobody cared about muddy shorts or wet hair anymore. It was just… fun. Simple as that. On the paddle back, Yuta snapped some goofy group shots with his waterproof camera — he promised he’d send them later for free. Still waiting for those photos but honestly I still think about that view out of the cave mouth toward open sky.
