The experience

How do you fit Matsuyama's best sites into one day without rushing? A private car and a licensed guide who knows the city means you stop where you want, linger as long as you like, and skip what doesn't interest you. The guide speaks English and Japanese, explains the history and significance of each place (the pilgrimage tradition at Ishite-ji Temple, the onsen bathing customs at Dogo, the Meiji-era Botchan Train that still runs through the streets), and can answer questions as you go. You pick 3–4 stops from a list of eight: Dogo Onsen, Ishite-ji Temple, the Botchan Train, Okaido arcade, Isaniwa Shrine, Bansuiso villa, the Dogo Onsen tram station, and Matsuyama Castle.

Matsuyama Castle sits on Mount Katsuyama in the city center, one of Japan's twelve original surviving castles, and a ropeway carries you up to the grounds. From there you see the city spread below and the Seto Inland Sea beyond. The castle grounds hold about two hundred cherry trees, making it a notable spot in late March and early April. Dogo Onsen is the oldest hot spring in Japan, its wooden bathhouse dating to 1894 and said to have inspired the bathhouse in Spirited Away. Your guide shares how locals bathe there and what the customs mean. Ishite-ji Temple, the 51st stop on the Shikoku 88-temple pilgrimage, has a National Treasure two-story gate and a three-story pagoda. The Botchan Train is a charming replica of a Meiji-era steam locomotive from Soseki Natsume's novel and still runs through Matsuyama's streets. Okaido arcade is the city's liveliest covered shopping street, lined with local shops, cafes and restaurants where you can sample Ehime citrus treats and Imabari towels.

The tour runs six hours total. You choose the vehicle size (a regular car for two, a minivan for up to four, or a van for up to seven), and the guide adjusts the itinerary to fit your interests and pace. Entrance fees and lunch are not included, so you decide where to eat and which sites to enter. The guide covers only the sites on your chosen itinerary, not additional stops outside that list.

Is this one for you?Pick this tour if you want to move at your own pace and choose which sites matter to you. The private vehicle and guide mean you skip the sites that don't interest you, linger longer at the ones that do, and ask questions as you go. Something a group tour or self-guided route won't give you. Choose the van if you're traveling with a larger family or group. The minivan or regular car if it's just two or three of you.
