The experience
I’ll be honest, I was a little nervous walking into the tea room in Gion: felt like I might mess up some ancient ritual or spill matcha on myself. But the moment we stepped inside, the air shifted. The light through the paper screens made everything look softer. Yuko explained how Zen philosophy shapes each movement in the Japanese tea ceremony. She whisked matcha so quietly that you could actually hear the bamboo brush tapping against the bowl: tiny sounds you’d never notice in a café back home. When it was my turn to try, my hands shook just a bit (I blame caffeine nerves), but Yuko nodded encouragingly. The matcha tasted grassy and almost creamy, not bitter at all, though maybe that’s because we had these beautiful sweets first, shaped like little flowers.
