You meet your guide within a designated area of Kyoto and tell them which temples and landmarks interest you most. The guide then builds a walking route that connects your choices—whether that's the vermillion torii gates at Fushimi Inari Shrine and the wooden architecture of Kiyomizu-dera Temple, or a mix of imperial palaces, castle grounds and the narrow alleyways of Gion where geisha still work. The itinerary is yours to shape, so a history buff can focus on UNESCO sites and Zen gardens while someone else might want Nishiki Market, the five-block food street known as Kyoto's Kitchen, alongside a temple or two.

Your guide is a licensed local who speaks English and knows the details most visitors miss—the stories behind the fox statues at Fushimi Inari (servants to the grain god), why certain gardens hide rocks from every angle, how the geisha district's narrow lanes have stayed unchanged for centuries. You walk the whole day, so wear comfortable shoes and expect to cover ground between sites; the guide adjusts the pace and can suggest rest stops. A 4-hour tour covers 2 to 3 sites, a 6-hour tour fits 3 to 4, and an 8-hour tour takes on 4 to 6, so the length you choose determines how deep you can go.
