The Experience

The walk starts in Gion, Kyoto's largest geisha district, where your guide explains what geisha actually are—the traditions, the lifestyle, the history—from someone who knows the culture from the inside. You'll move through Gion Shirakawa, the most beautiful part of the district, where old-fashioned wooden buildings line a riverside and traditional theaters sit quiet in the afternoon light. The main street of Gion is where you might spot a geisha walking between appointments. Along the way you'll stop at a Shinto shrine to learn what the native Japanese religion is, and visit Kennin-ji Temple, a Zen Buddhist temple built in 1202, where the guide talks about what Zen Buddhism means in practice.

In the second half, you meet a Maiko—an apprentice geisha—for conversation and questions. She performs a traditional dance, one or two songs, and then sits with you for tea, lunch or dinner, depending on which option you chose at checkout. This is the part most travelers can't access on their own: the geisha world is closed to outsiders, and the Maiko's time is the rare window into it. You can take photographs during the meeting, though posting them publicly isn't allowed.
