The experience
Kitano Ijinkan sits in the north, a neighborhood of restored Western-style houses that survived the city's modernization. From there the route moves through Sorakoen, a traditional Japanese garden built around a lake, moss, boulders and a small waterfall where you spend time sitting and looking rather than rushing through. China Town comes next, a tight grid of narrow streets lined with restaurants and stalls where the stops are yours to make. The tour leaves room for eating and photographs.
The waterfront half of the day centers on Meriken Park and the Hanshin Awaji Great Earthquake Memorial Park, where the Red Port Tower and the white Kobe Marine Museum face each other across the harbor. A cruising tour around Kobe Port is part of the itinerary, and the views of Kobe and Osaka across the water are strongest at sundown. The Nunobiki Herb Garden sits in the north and offers panoramic views of both cities.
Your guide speaks English, French, Arabic or Japanese. Pick the language when you book. The tour runs six hours and can be adjusted to fit what you want to see or do. If you're not staying in Kobe, the guide can answer questions about what else is worth visiting during your time there. Kobe beef lunch is optional and arranged separately.
