Rent a traditional kimono in Nikko with professional fitting, obi, undergarments, socks, sandals and a handmade hair accessory included. You're dressed by staff at COCON NIKKO, then free to explore the town: Nikko Toshogu Shrine, Shinkyo Bridge and seasonal gardens are the main draws, and staff recommend routes before you leave.

The experience

The fitting happens first at COCON NIKKO, where staff dress you in a full kimono set: the robe itself, obi sash, nagajuban undergarment, tabi socks, zori sandals and a small bag. The process takes about an hour, and the staff work carefully to make sure everything sits right and feels comfortable. As a bonus for booking through the booking platform, you also get a handmade hair ornament to wear. Something not included in other rental shops in the area.

Once you're ready, you step outside into Nikko. The town is built around World Heritage sites: Nikko Toshogu Shrine, the vermilion-lacquered Shinkyo Bridge, Futarasan Shrine and Rinnoji Temple are the landmarks most visitors photograph in kimono. The staff point you toward the best spots and can suggest a route that fits how much time you have. You explore at your own pace, stopping to take photos or sit in a garden whenever you want. The kimono itself becomes the backdrop. The whole point is to walk through these historic streets dressed as if you belong to another era.

English-speaking staff are on hand before you leave, and translation tools are available if you need help. Public transportation runs nearby if your feet tire, and the rental includes everything you wear, so there's nothing else to carry or arrange.
