Pitch your tent between shrine paths and lake shores, then explore by foot or paddle.
A camping package at TORCH campsite in Nikko includes a tent, sleeping gear, cooking equipment and a local guide who introduces the area and recommends activities not in standard guidebooks. The campsite sits between Nikko Toshogu Shrine (20 minutes on foot) and Okunikko in Nikko National Park (1 hour by bus), so you can reach both without moving your base. Check-in runs from 1 PM to 4 PM. Checkout is by 11 AM. A guide speaks English, Japanese or Chinese.
The Experience
TORCH sits in the middle ground between two Nikko zones: the shrine district where most visitors cluster, and Okunikko, the mountain section of the national park. That position is the whole point. You pitch your own tent using the provided setup, then have a local guide walk you through what matters: the trekking routes, where to fish, which lake spots work for paddle boarding, the history layered into the landscape. The guide curates recommendations based on what you want to do, not what the standard itinerary says you should.
The package includes everything you need to cook and sleep: a tent for two to five people, sleeping bags and mats for each person, a gas burner, pots and pans, plates and cutlery, a folding table and chairs, a lantern and headlamp, seasonings and mosquito repellent incense. You arrive between 1 PM and 4 PM and leave by 11 AM the next day. The campsite has toilets, a shower, WiFi and a washing machine (both paid). A supermarket is a 15-minute walk away, and a larger one is a 15-minute drive. If you want to stay longer or add activities (electric bicycle rental or SUP tours on the lake), both are available for extra cost.
This is not a guided tour where you ride in a vehicle and stop at marked viewpoints. You're camping, which means you set the pace and choose what to do each day. The guide's job is to know the area well enough to point you toward things that don't appear in guidebooks and to explain what you're looking at. Whether you want to hike, fish, paddle, or just sit by the fire and learn the history, the setup gives you the freedom to decide.
