Experience a serene moment near Nikko Toshogu Shrine, guided with heartfelt care
A private tea ceremony and kimono dressing experience in Nikko takes 90 minutes at a tea room near the UNESCO World Heritage site of Nikko Toshogu Shrine. A certified tea ceremony teacher and kimono dressing master guides you through both traditions in English or Japanese, walking you through each movement and its meaning. The experience includes full kimono with accessories, hands-on tea ceremony practice, traditional sweets, matcha, and photo support. You change out of the kimono on-site before leaving.
The Experience
Nikko Toshogu Shrine draws crowds year-round, but this tea room sits away from them. You arrive and change into a full kimono set (robe, obi and accessories) with guidance from someone certified in kimono dressing. The host then leads you into the tea room itself, where you learn the ceremony step by step: how to move, how to hold the whisk, what each gesture means. It is not a demonstration you watch. You practice the movements, and the host corrects them gently. Even if this is your first time, the instruction is built for beginners.
The tea room uses utensils with ties to Nikko's history, and you prepare and drink matcha alongside traditional Japanese sweets. The host shares the spirit behind each part of the ceremony: why the movements flow the way they do, what the tea room's design represents. Photography happens inside the room, so you have images of yourself in kimono at the ceremony. The entire experience stays indoors, so weather does not change the day.
After 90 minutes, you change back into your own clothes on-site. The host speaks English or Japanese, and the experience works for anyone 16 and older. Chairs are available if you need them instead of sitting on the floor. Public transportation runs nearby if you are traveling without a car.

Live guide in English and Japanese.
What exactly do I do during the tea ceremony part?
You practice the movements of preparing matcha tea yourself under the host's guidance, learning how to whisk, pour and present the tea. The host demonstrates each step first, then watches as you do it, correcting your posture and hand position so the movements flow correctly.

Is there anything I need to know about sitting or mobility during the experience?
The tea ceremony traditionally takes place seated on the floor. Chairs are available upon request if you need them instead. The experience is not recommended for pregnant travelers.
