But the stops most people don't know about are the ones that make the photos worth keeping: Yarabudake, a small rocky mountain on the quiet western side where locals call the peak "the troll's tongue," or Tabaga Beach, tucked away with clear water and mountain views and almost nobody there.

The limestone cave is a different kind of stop—cool air, stalactites and stalagmites carved over thousands of years, the kind of underground space that photographs in shades of grey and blue.
