The Experience
The first thing I noticed was the quiet — just the soft slap of water against our boards and a kind of green stillness under the mangroves. We’d barely left Uehara Port when our guide, Yuto, handed out life jackets and joked about my “city paddling style.” The river here is calm, even if your heart isn’t. I could smell salt and something sweet from the leaves. Sometimes a bird would call out — sharp, sudden — then nothing but us drifting. My arms got the hang of SUP after a few wobbles (and one near fall; Yuto laughed, said everyone does it).
After an hour or so we stopped for a break on this muddy bank — shoes squelching in the silt — and ate snacks Yuto brought along. He showed us how to spot tiny crabs hiding in the roots. The sun felt heavy but not harsh, filtered by all that green overhead. Iriomote’s mangrove rivers are close enough to Ishigaki for a day trip but feel like another world. If you’re worried about fitness or getting wet, don’t be; they’ve got helmets and everything covered. Plus, honestly, you’ll get wet anyway during canyoning — there’s no way around it.
Canyoning started with a nervous laugh from me (and maybe a curse under my breath). The rocks were slick and cold at first touch. We slid down natural chutes into clear pools while Yuto snapped photos with his waterproof camera — he promised to send them later (he did). There’s this moment where you just let go and trust gravity; I still think about that drop sometimes when I’m back in my apartment. By the end we were soaked, grinning like kids, hair plastered to our faces.
We finished up with warm showers at their office before heading back to Uehara Port. My shoes were caked in mud and my legs a bit shaky but it felt good — real good. Not sure if it was the adrenaline or just being out there with people who know these rivers by heart.
