The Experience

The day starts at Uehara Port or your accommodation in the Uehara area at 9 AM, then heads straight to the water. You'll spend the first hour paddling or paddling a canoe through Iriomote's mangrove channels—a narrow, sheltered stretch where the trees form a tunnel overhead and the water stays calm. The guide leads the pace and handles the safety briefing; a life jacket and specialized water shoes are mandatory. By 10:30 you're back on shore and heading to Barasu Island, a sandbar that shifts with the tide and changes size depending on sea conditions, so the exact timing and what you find there varies from day to day.

Lunch happens at the port around noon, and you pick from recommended spots nearby rather than eating as a group. At 1:30 PM the tour moves to Yubu Island, where a water buffalo hitched to a cart carries you across the shallow water to the island itself—the ride takes about 15 minutes and is the moment most travelers photograph. You'll spend time on the island, then ride the buffalo back to the cart station and return to Uehara Port by 4:15 PM. A hot shower is available at the office before you leave, and you'll need to bring a change of clothes and towel since wet clothes aren't allowed on the ferry back to Ishigaki.
