The experience
The tour begins in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, where you'll stand before the Atomic Bomb Dome, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that remains from August 6, 1945. Your guide walks you through the park's solemn monuments (the Cenotaph for the A-bomb Victims draped with paper cranes, and the eternal Flame of Peace) before entering the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. The museum's exhibits provide the historical context for what you're seeing outside, moving through the events of that day and Hiroshima's transformation into a center for peace advocacy.
From the Peace Memorial, you travel by public transit (tram, bus and ferry included) to Miyajima Island. Your guide leads a one-hour walk through the island's serene streets and the hills behind the shrine, pointing out the traditional architecture and explaining the site's spiritual significance. You then have free time to explore on your own: wandering the shops, sampling local maple-leaf cakes called Momiji Manju, or sitting in a traditional tea house. The tour reconvenes at the ferry for the return to central Hiroshima.
The centerpiece on Miyajima is Itsukushima Shrine, where the massive torii gate stands in the Seto Inland Sea. At high tide it appears to float. The shrine's polished wood interiors and the sound of waves create a reflective atmosphere. You'll also see Tenshinkaku, the Pavilion of Heavenly Spirits, with its intricate wooden design and traditional tatami rooms. Throughout both locations, your guide-photographer frames moments for professional photos, turning the day's reflections into images you can take home.
