The experience

If you have a free morning from Tokyo and want to see Mt. Fuji without arranging separate transport, this tour strings together Hakone's signature rides in sequence. You start at your chosen station (Shinjuku if you're in central Tokyo, or Odawara, Gora, or Hakone-Yumoto if you're already closer), and board the Hakone Tozan Railway with your guide. The train climbs through forested switchbacks. From the cable car that follows, the landscape opens to volcanic terrain. The ropeway is the final ascent, and from it you see the black volcanic slopes of Owakudani and the plume of steam rising from the vents. The guide will point out the black boiled eggs sold at the station there, steamed by the volcanic heat.

From Owakudani, the ropeway descends to Lake Ashi's shore. A sightseeing boat waits at Togendai Station, where there's a restaurant if you want lunch before boarding. The boat crosses the lake with Mt. Fuji visible across the water on clear days, and the wake trailing white on the blue surface. After disembarking, a short walk leads to a shrine with a red torii gate at the lake's edge, where you can stand in the quiet of the national park. The guide then escorts you back to Hakone-Yumoto by bus to close the loop.

The tour runs five and a half hours total. Your guide speaks English and knows the timing of each transport connection, so you don't wait between the railway, cable car, ropeway and boat. Ropeway and boat fares are paid separately during the tour, not included in the booking price.

What’s included

  • Curated route covering Hakone's top sights.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Japanese.

Can I start the tour from Tokyo if I'm staying in Shinjuku?

Yes. Shinjuku is one of four departure options. The guide meets you there and takes you all the way to Hakone-Yumoto at the end. If you're closer to Odawara, Gora, or Hakone-Yumoto itself, you can pick that station instead at checkout.

What is Owakudani and why does it have steam coming out of the ground?

Owakudani is a volcanic valley reached by ropeway where hot springs and volcanic vents release steam and sulfurous gases. The area is famous for black boiled eggs cooked in the volcanic heat, and the overlook gives you a direct view of the smoking vents and the mountainous terrain around them.

Will I see Mt. Fuji on the boat ride across Lake Ashi?

Mt. Fuji is visible from Lake Ashi on clear days, framed across the water from the sightseeing boat. The view depends on weather and cloud cover, but the lake itself and the surrounding mountains are always part of the crossing.

How much time do I spend on each form of transport?

The tour uses the Tozan Railway, cable car, ropeway, and sightseeing boat in sequence across five and a half hours total. The guide coordinates the connections so you move smoothly between each one without long waits.

Is lunch included, or do I need to bring food?

Lunch is not included in the tour price. There is a restaurant at Togendai Station by Lake Ashi where you can eat before or after the boat ride, and you can also bring your own food.

Can I bring a stroller or pram on this tour?

Yes. Infants and small children can ride in a pram or stroller, and the tour is suitable for all fitness levels. Service animals are also allowed.
