Extract pearls from Akoya oysters with your own hands in Osaka, selecting from several shells and using a butter knife to open yours. Each pearl is one-of-a-kind in color, shape and size. Staff can process your pearl into jewelry on the spot for an additional fee, ready to take home the same day.

The experience

You walk in, pick the Akoya oyster you want to work with, and use a butter knife to crack it open yourself. The pearl inside is already formed: what you're doing is retrieving it. Because these are real oysters that grew the pearls over time, each one is different: some are perfectly round, others irregular. The colors and sizes vary. That variation is the whole point. You get to see what nature produced in the shell you chose, and you take it home.

The experience runs about 30 minutes. Your kit includes the knife and a plate to work on. A Japanese-speaking guide is there to walk you through the process, so anyone from children to adults can do this regardless of experience. If you want to turn your pearl into a pendant, ring or other accessory, the staff will make it for you right there. You pay a separate fee (estimated under $50, depending on what you're creating) and leave with the finished piece the same day. You can also buy additional oysters on the spot if you want more pearls.

Public transportation is nearby if you're coming from elsewhere in Osaka. Infants sit on a parent's lap. No fitness level or prior knowledge required.
